<p><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Examination Information:</span></strong></p>
<p>The Examination Schedule has been distributed to all students.  Extra copies are available in the main office and also on-line on our website.</p>
<p> As mentioned in a previous communication, all students MUST write their examination as per the schedule. </p>
<p> Over the next two weeks, teachers will be reviewing lessons and many classes will be conducting culminating activities and in-class evaluations.  This is a crucial time for all students and attendance is key to success. I also urge students to see their classroom teachers for extra help as needed.</p>
<p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Textbook Check:</span></strong></p>
<p>Next week, students will be asked to produce their textbooks and supplementary resources for our semester-end check.  Any textbook, library book or resource on loan that is not turned in during an evaluation/exam will have to be paid for by the student.  Now is a good time for all students to ensure that they have all their assigned textbooks and loaned resources.</p>
<p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Exam Review &amp; Semester 2 Start-up:</span></strong></p>
<p>Students will have an opportunity to review their exams on February 3rd, beginning with Period 1 at 9:00 a.m.  At 12:15 p.m. students will once again go to their Semester 1 home form to pick up their Semester 2 timetables. Semester 2 homeform begins at 12:20 p.m.  Students are dismissed at 1:30 p.m.  Please see the attachment above for the February 3rd schedule.</p>
<p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Semester 2 Timetable Changes:</span></strong></p>
<p>Students will have an opportunity to make timetable changes as per the schedule outlined at the bottom of their Semester 2 timetable.  Since many of our classes in semester 2 are at capacity, some changes will not be possible.  Students are to remain in their timetabled class until a change is confirmed.  All timetable change requests will be conducted outside of class time. </p>
<p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">School Council Meeting &#8212; Wednesday, January 18 &#8212; 7:00 p.m.</span></strong></p>
<p>Your School Council co-chairs have arranged for an informative School Council Meeting.  There will be a presentation on Teens and Mental Health with Dave Maynard, Mental Health Supervisor at the St. Elizabeth Health Centre, and Harvey Nagelberg, Chief of Social Work for the TDSB.  They will share some of the most prevalent cases they are seeing and will give us some strategies about detecting issues in our children and how to help them.  The presentation begins at 7:00 p.m.  The regular portion of our School Council meeting will follow the presentation.  Please see the above two attachments.</p>
<p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Graduation Photos:</span></strong></p>
<p>An announcement was made this morning for graduating students who do not have an appointment for their grad photo.  Lifetouch has opened up January 20th for those who still need an appointment.  To book your appointment, please go to <a href="http://www.lifetouch.ca/toronto">http://www.lifetouch.ca/toronto</a>   Should your student experience difficulty signing up, please sign on the sheet in the main office.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As we count down to the final days of school in 2011, I would like to recap what we’ve accomplished over the past few weeks. </p>
<p>On Monday, December 5<sup>th</sup>, our Director, Dr. Spence, visited the Business Management classes to thank them for the work they did for the United Way campaign.  Dr. Spence and his daughter were presented with the United Way video that the classes submitted, followed by the School Show video where students outlined the need for raising funds for the Toronto Foundation for Student Success. </p>
<p>All eyes were on our School Show, <em>“Thoroughly Modern Millie.”</em>  On December 7<sup>th</sup>, the Business Management classes presented an opening night gala, which was followed by the first showing of <em>“Millie</em>.”   The amazing Thursday show was followed by an elegant Friday dinner theatre extravaganza, complete with entertainment, amazing food (prepared by Marc Garneau C.I.’s Foods class), a raffle and a full-house audience for the show. The audience showed their appreciation by raising the roof at the end of the show.  The run ended with a standing ovation at the end of Saturday’s matinee.  <em>“Millie”</em> certainly raised the bar as a testament to what student &amp; teacher partnerships can accomplish when they work towards a common goal.  Net profits will go to the Toronto Foundation for Student Success.  Congratulations to all the staff and students who made this outstanding event a reality.</p>
<p>After school last Thursday our teachers played the grade 10, grade 11 and senior volleyball teams in a gruelling series of games.  At times it seemed that the students might win, then at the half-time point, the teachers caught up and won by a few points.  The spectators cheered for their favourite teams and a terrific time was had by all.</p>
<p>Last night we held our traditional Winter Music Night.  Under the direction of Mr. Gray, Ms. Frensch and Ms. Hakala, our music classes brilliantly showcased their talents and accomplishments.  The evening ended with a resounding “encore” from the audience.  Congratulations to all for a memorable Winter Music Night.</p>
<p>What’s next?  On Thursday, December 22<sup>nd</sup>, students will have an opportunity to buy out of period 4 in order to watch our traditional Alumni Hockey game at the York Mills arena, beginning at 2:00 p.m.  Tickets for this game are being sold at lunch.  All proceeds are going to Eva’s Place.</p>
<p>Friday, December 23<sup>rd</sup>  will be a special day schedule with a 12:05 p.m. dismissal for students.  There will be no cafeteria service.   Staff will remain in the building for a year-end staff meeting.</p>
<p>A reminder to parents and graduating Grade 12 students that they must pick up a grad photo form in the office and book their grad photo appointments online.  Grad photos begin on January 10<sup>th</sup>. </p>
<p>School resumes on January 9<sup>th</sup> with a regular day schedule. </p>
<p>I want to take this opportunity to wish the York Mills C.I. community peace, health and happiness in the coming year.</p>

<p>As you know, the school show is rapidly approaching. The York Mills School Show Production team and the Grade 12 Business Management students are very busy preparing to make the best show in York Mills history!</p>
<p>At this time, I would like to extend a personal invitation to all of you to attend the shows, especially to the Dinner Theatre being held on Friday, December 9th, 2011. This will be an amazing dinner, prepared by the hospitality department at Marc Garneau C.I. The students and I went for a tasting session last week and I can personally vouch that the dinner will be outstanding!</p>

<p><strong>SAVING THE ENVIRONMENT ONE BAG AT A TIME…</strong></p>
<p>Eric Sellors, Associate Dealer of Canadian Tire at Sheppard and Leslie, was pleased to donate cheques of $1260 each to representatives from four area schools: Earl Haig Secondary, George S. Henry Academy, Georges Vanier Secondary and York Mills Collegiate. The money was collected from the sale of plastic bags in the store. Since June 1, 2009, retailers in Toronto are required to charge 5 cents per plastic bag requested by the customer at checkout. This initiative is designed to help Toronto meet its goal of diverting 70 per cent of waste from landfills. Today’s presentation marked the second major donation to the schools of proceeds from the sale of bags and was an opportunity to find out about environmental initiatives in each school.</p>
<p>Efforts at York Mills Collegiate have centered on the creation of a green bin program in the school to compost waste and divert it from landfill. Students have been creative in enlisting area assistance: once a week the school bins are wheeled to neighbouring households for curbside pick up. Matthew Green told us that the school has been successful in reducing compostable waste from 60 to 45 per cent.</p>
<p>Canadian Tire applauds all these efforts and is delighted to be a partner in making our schools and community a better and greener place in which to live. It’s all about making wise choices for our families, our community and our future.</p>

<p><strong>Free Online Math Tutoring Available </strong></p>
<p>In the evening, your child can get math support at <span style="text-decoration:underline;">Homework Help</span>. Your child can now log in to <span style="text-decoration:underline;">Homework Help </span>Sunday-Thursday, 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., for one-on-one math tutoring. There are interactive discussion rooms for each grade where students can view a current lesson, watch tutors draw on the whiteboard — and then type their own question.</p>
<p> Other math resources on the Homework Help website include videos of teachers leading students through the 20 most commonly asked math problems, interactive math tutorials and highlights of best sessions. All students have a virtual locker, where their work is saved in video format for viewing anytime.</p>

<li>There are several students who belong to a GHOST home form that have yet to pick up their university application package from the Guidance Office.  Please remind your son/daughter to come to Guidance to pick one up.  The package includes important information regarding the application procedures and deadline dates.  Thank you. </li>
<li>Any students intending to apply to university must pick up a PIN # in order to login to OUAC and select university program options.  PIN numbers are available in the Guidance office this week starting today and will be distributed before school (starting at 8:00am), after school (until 4:00pm) or during a student’s lunch or spare.  These numbers should be kept confidential as they provide access to the Ontario University Application Centre website.  A green instruction sheet is attached to each PIN# to help you along.</li>
<li>Any students intending to apply to college, should make an appointment with their counsellor in order to begin the process as soon as possible.  The process is different for college applications.  Students are expected to create an account and then select their programs of choice and must enter their OEN number which is found on their timetable.</li>

<p>This could be an exciting opportunity for ONE of our graduating students who is enrolling in the <strong>STEM</strong> (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) areas of study at participating Canadian university in the fall, 2012.</p>
<p>I would like to spread the word about the <a title="http://www.schulichleaders.com/" href="http://www.schulichleaders.com/" target="_blank">Schulich Leader Scholarships</a> in the Ontario Mathematics Gazette and other relevant publications/newsletters. This four-year scholarship valued at $60,000 is for students enrolling in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) areas of study at a participating Canadian university in fall, 2012. The <em>Schulich Leader Scholarships program </em>asks every high school, secondary school and CEGEP (in Quebec) across Canada to select <strong>one</strong> student to represent their school as a<em>Schulich Leader Nominee</em>.  From this pool of nominees, 20 pre-selected universities across Canada will each choose <strong>one</strong> outstanding student to be their <em>Schulich Leader</em>, each of whom will receive a four-year scholarship valued at $60,000 to support their studies at that university in a STEM faculty. For the inaugural year of the program, you must submit the name of your <em>Schulich Leader Nominee</em> no later than <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Friday, January 13, 2012.</span></strong></p>

<p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">School Show:  <em>Thoroughly Modern Millie</em> – December 7 – 10 </span></strong></p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Opening Gala &amp; Dinner Theatre</span></strong></p>
<p>Once again our Grade 12 Management class has been working vigorously to put together a blockbuster event in December. Every year, Ms. Persaud’s business management class puts on a fundraiser and this year will be their most ambitious one yet. The York Mills School Show is an event that only happens once every other year and thus the expectations are always high. This year, the management class has teamed up with the School Show “Thoroughly Modern Millie” (a musical production) to help raise awareness and funds for the Toronto Foundation for Student Success- a charity that helps kids all over the TDSB to be successful in school by providing them with basic necessities such as school supplies, nutritious breakfasts, and after school programs.</p>
<p>All net proceeds generated from the event, which is scheduled to kick off on December 7th and finish on December 10<sup>th</sup>, will go directly to the Foundation. From promotional videos to detailed floor plans, the kids are doing everything they can to ensure a successful production. With spectacular events planned such as the “Opening Night Gala” held on the 7th as well as a gourmet “Dinner Theatre” evening on Friday the 9th, all of us here at York Mills are forced to live with anticipation.</p>
<p>Parents, students, and teachers are all welcome to join us for this grand event. We hope to see everyone there.</p>
<p>Since space is limited for the Dinner Theatre event on December 9<sup>th</sup>,  I urge students to purchase tickets $30.00 (includes dinner and show) for parents as early as possible.  Tickets are available during lunch.</p>

<p>Teachers plan to invite a freelance writer who used to be an immigrant and now writes restaurant reviews to speak to my ESL students. He will share his Post-Secondary experience including challenges he had faced. He will also teach students the required skills for being a journalist and demonstrate how to write a news report. The difference between an informal and formal writing will be covered.</p>
<p> Our ELS 208 class (English Literacy Skills adapted for ESL students) was recently a demo classroom for TDSB teachers. The teachers were interested in seeing a multi-level class in action. We were simultaneously studying five novels (at various levels of difficulty) using the Literature Circle format. The teachers who visited were impressed with the teaching and learning skills demonstrated by our staff and students.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Grade 12 Accounting</span></strong></p>
<p>All grade 12 accounting classes participated in the Carleton University Sprott Business Competition. Two teams are participating in the semi-finals on Friday November 25th. We also have approximately 100 York Mills students participating in the Junior Achievement Company Program. In the spring, a group of grade 12 accounting students from each of the four classes will be participating in the OBEA accounting contest.</p>
<p>  <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Best Buddies Club &amp; Our DD Class</span></strong></p>
<p>Best Buddies celebrated Emily and Corey&#8217;s birthday last week.</p>
<p>Some Buddies attended the &#8220;Evening of Friendship: Celebration&#8221; organized by Best Buddies Canada.  It was an evening of dining, dancing and friendship.</p>
<p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Athletic Eligibility</span></strong></p>
<p style="text-align:left;" align="center">As you know the athletic/academic policy at York Mills states that an athlete MUST be:</p>
<ul>
<li>Attending regularly and passing a minimum of 3 day-school (YM) credits</li>
<li>If an athlete quits a team (or is asked to leave by the coach/teacher) he/she will be excluded from participating in their following season</li>
</ul>
<p> We are currently going through all team lists and checking eligibility/attendance.</p>
<p>If there is a concern the coach will be contacted.</p>
<p>Coaches are asked to discuss the academic/attendance concern with the player.  If the athletic/academic policy has been violated, the athlete may request to appeal the violation.  The athlete, his/her parent and coach must request a meeting with the appropriate Vice-Principal to appeal. A meeting date and time will be set up by the VP.</p>
<p>The the final decision on whether on not he/she is able to participate will be made by the administration. </p>

<p style="text-align:center;"> <strong>2011 YORK MILLS C.I. ATHLETICS FALL SEASON </strong></p>
<p><strong> </strong><strong>Cross Country</strong>: York Mills claimed the Sr. Boy’s, Sr. Girl’s and the Overall School Team North Region titles. Every runner qualified and advanced to the city championships.  Special congratulations go out to Connie Yang, Hei Chan, Matthew Fynney, Nathaniel Hu, Kwesi Kwarko-Fosu and Tian-shi Ning for making the Provincial Championships-Ofsaa.</p>
<p> <strong>Varsity Girl’s Field Hockey:</strong> Returning to the top since 2009, the girl’s field hockey team captured the North Region title this year finishing with a league record of four wins and defeating arch rival Earl Haig in the North region finals. They qualified for City Championships where they were eliminated in the semi-finals against North Toronto finishing 4<sup>th</sup> in the TDSB.</p>
<p><strong>Junior Boy’s Soccer: </strong>The boy’s started off the season in great fashion winning their first 4 games of the season.  Unfortunately they ran out of gas and just missed the playoffs in a very competitive North region division.</p>
<p> <strong>Senior Boy’s Soccer: </strong>After making an appearance at the Provincial championships last year the team had to rebuild as many members graduated.  Composed of mainly grade 11’s, the team fought hard and competed against many more experienced teams losing close battles throughout the regular season.  </p>
<p><strong> </strong><strong>Senior Boy’s Volleyball</strong>:  After losing 5 starters from last year’s North Region championship team, the seniors composed of mainly grade 11’s finished the regular season with a very impressive 6 wins and 1 loss.  The team finished as Silver medalist in the North region losing a competitive match to a more experienced Westview team.  The senior boy’s team also captured a Silver medal at the York Mills Invitational tournament.</p>
<p> <strong>Junior Boy’s Volleyball:</strong></p>
<p>Since York Mills started a junior volleyball program, the school has won back to back North Region titles.  Finishing the regular season with an undefeated record of 8 wins, the team defeated Don Mills in the championship game to claim another gold medal.  Eventually losing to Agincourt in the City Championship playoffs, the team finished with an impressive year ranking 4<sup>th</sup> in the TDSB. </p>
<p><strong> </strong><strong>Junior Girl’s Basketball:  </strong>The Jr. girl’s basketball team fought hard every game and eventually lost to the North region champions Downsview in the quarter-finals.</p>
<p><strong> </strong><strong>Senior Girls Basketball:  </strong>Finishing the regular season with 5 wins and 3 losses, the team took a surprising loss in the quarter-finals to Newtonbrook.  Having numerous players returning next season, the team looks to bounce back and be hungry for another title. </p>
<p><strong> </strong><strong>Tennis: </strong> Both the girl’s and boy’s tennis team had another stellar winning season.  The boy’s team captured the North Region title and have now won it three years in a row, while the girl’s claimed the Silver medal.</p>
<p> <strong>Golf</strong>: The boy’s team this year had another outstanding performance finishing as the North region gold medalists in back to back years as they were lead by grade 10 Gavin McQueenie and grade 11 Matthew Fynney who won individual Gold and Bronze respectively.  A very impressive showing for a young team that will be dominate in the years to come.</p>
<p><strong> </strong><strong>Rugby:  </strong></p>
<p>Once again the York Mills Rugby 7’s team competed and contended for another championship.</p>
<p>Having a jr. boy’s team that was young and eager, Mr Chang turned this group of athletes into experienced veterans that just missed the championship game.  The Sr. Girl’s and Sr. Boy’s also played with poise, participating in numerous tournaments, and finishing on the upper tier of the City Championship tournament.</p>

<p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Spanish  Classes News</span></strong></p>
<p>Last week Ms. Davis &amp; Ms. Delanghe took our Grade 11 and 12 Spanish classes to see the Argentinian film &#8220;Un cuento chino&#8221;, followed by a Mexican lunch at &#8220;Milagro&#8221; restaurant.</p>
<p> Early December all Grade 10 Spanish students will visit the Lula Lounge  for a day of Cuban percussion, Latin lunch and a salsa dance lesson.</p>
<p>Also in December Ms. Snyder and Ms. Delanghe are taking Grade 10 and 11 French students to Lula Lounge for a French Cafe day which includes French folk dancing lessons and learning French-African songs.</p>

<p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">March Break Trip to Greece</span></strong></p>
<p>With just over 100 days to March Break, we wanted to update the community on the group size and make-up of our tour to Greece and Turkey.  We have 4 boys, 4 girls and two chaperones enrolled.  There is room for 4 more students but prices go up December 1<sup>st</sup>. </p>
<p> There has been a change in the itinerary with Istanbul and Ephesus in Turkey added to our ports of call.  We fly overnight to Athens.  We will spend 3 days in Athens visiting the Temple of Zeus, the Olympic Stadium and the Acropolis among other sites.  We then transfer by bus to Delphi on our way to Patras.  We visit Olympia on the way to Argolida.  We visit the Greek theatre in Epidaurus.  On our way back to Athens we stop at the Corinth Canal.  The next morning, we will board the cruise ship for a 3 day adventure to Istanbul and Izmir (Ephesus) in Turkey.</p>
<p> With 6 sightseeing tours led by local guides and a walking tour of Athens, it will be a very full 12 days!  However, there will be free time to taste the local cuisine and do some shopping.  As on our past European tours, unforgettable moments will be shared and friendships forged along the way.   There is still time to join our adventure!  Call Ms. Wilton at 416-395-3340, extension 4 for further details.</p>

<p>Students completed the census in home form on Monday.  Those who were absent will have a final opportunity on Thursday to complete it. </p>

<p>This is a reminder that it is a Ministry requirement that all students write a final evaluation.  Please note the examination schedule as printed in the student agenda and as per below dates. </p>
<p>Students will NOT be given opportunities to write ANY examination outside of the examination time.  Each year we receive requests from parents for permission allowing students to write outside of the posted schedule due to a family vacation.  The examination schedule has been posted since September and cannot be altered. </p>

<p><strong>WELCOME OUR CLASSROOM</strong></p>
<p style="text-align:left;" align="center">It has been a great start to the semester in HFN20!  It was a pleasure to meet so many of you at YMCI’s Curriculum Night, and at Parents’ Night, as well as speaking with some of you by phone.</p>
<p>As we start term 2 of Semester 1, I want to take the opportunity to let you know more about our grade 10 Food and Nutrition class.</p>
<p> Wonderful news is that we have a daily volunteer named “Big John” Hudspith, a retired engineer, who has been part of the York Mills family for 12 years. This year he has chosen to assist in Family Studies.  He’s a great cook.  His perspective on issues we cover in class has been enlightening.  His assistance during labs has been invaluable.  He has organized the display case of exemplary work in the front foyer of the school.  Thank you, Big John, for all you do to make it a safe and caring classroom for all of us.</p>

<p> Alexis Dee, a graduate of George Brown College’s patisserie programme, joined us on November 10 to talk about careers in the food industry and vegetarian lifestyles.</p>

<p> Students have also made a new friend, Cory, our “best buddy” who joins us on Fridays from room 143.  He recently turned 18, so congratulations Cory!</p>
<p><strong>WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED?</strong></p>
<p> Your student has investigated food choices, such as psychological, social and cultural reasons, the effects of technology, childhood eating patterns, and food marketing.  Students practised primary social science research skills by conducting interviews for an intergenerational study of food choices.  In our first food lab, students made oatmeal cookies, a common “comfort food”.</p>
<p> We investigated careers in food and nutrition.  Students chose a career and prepared an information brochure by researching qualifications, working conditions and quotes from people working in that field.</p>
<p> To complement our careers lessons, we watched the movie <em>Ratatouille</em>, about the operation of a restaurant.  Then, with the guidance of Amélie, our exchange student from France, we learned how to prepare real French ratatouille.</p>
<p> We are now completing our unit on the food needs of individuals and families.  To me, no literacy or numeracy is complete without the knowledge of how to read a recipe.  Students have created fabulous cookbooks, and in the process learned concepts like conversions, substitutions and yield changes.</p>
<p> <strong>WHAT’S NEXT?</strong></p>
<p> Upcoming units include “Nutrition, Health and Well-being” including Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide; “Body Image” (anorexia, bulimia and steroid use); and “Food from Canadian and Global Perspectives”&#8211;our native food heritage, world hunger and food diversity.</p>
<p> In addition, every Friday is “Food Network Friday”.  Students learn from experts, reflect on their viewing, and some have tried new recipes at home. </p>
<p>The culminating activity at the end of the semester is “YMTV”.  In groups, student will present a food preparation demonstration on a theme of their choice.  In past years, the presentations have been informative, entertaining and fun.</p>

<p>Parents were happy to learn that students in grade 10 science classes will be hearing a presentation on breast cancer detection and prevention. </p>
<p>All grade 10 students will participate in our Grade 10 Eco Day on November 17<sup>th</sup>.  They will hear from a variety of guest speakers, and they’ll have an opportunity to participate in some hands-on experiments.</p>
<p>The York Mills Athletic Council announced that YMCI apparel is being sold during lunch.  Parents suggested that the order form be made available to parents in the event that parents want to purchase the clothes for special occasions.  The order form was made available to you under separate cover.  Please be sure to get the form back to Jackie Couch before Friday at 2:00 p.m.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Report Cards:</span></strong></p>
<p>Mid-semester report cards will be distributed during Home Form, period 1 on Friday, November 11.  Ghost Home Form students may pick up their report cards in Guidance.  Please feel free to contact the school to speak to the teacher if you have concerns about your child’s academic performance.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Grade 10 Mathematics After-School Opportunity</span></strong></p>
<p>We are offering an after-school program for Grade 10 students who are currently at risk of successfully completing their math course.  The following invitation will be attached to the report cards of students deemed at risk.  Space in this program is limited and I urge parents to enrol your child as soon as possible.</p>

<p>You are being contacted because your child’s grade 10 math teacher has strongly recommended that he/she receive additional numeracy support.  To help your child be more successful in the area of numeracy, we will be providing an after school numeracy program. There is no charge to take part in this program. The program is intended for students who are experiencing difficulty and could benefit from the additional support. The classes will run Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from <strong>3:15 pm – 4:15 pm in room 205</strong>. The start date of the program is <strong>Tuesday, November 22, 2011.</strong>  If your child is accepted into the program, you will be notified as to which class (Tue. or Thur.) he or she will be registered in.   A qualified staff member from our school will be teaching the class. </p>
<p>We ask that you sign and return the bottom portion of this permission form to your child’s math teacher as soon as possible to let us know if your child will be taking part in the <strong>After School Numeracy Program. Students will be registered on a first come, first serve basis.</strong></p>

<p>I want to thank our School Council Co-chair, Julie Uehling, for her presentation at the Ward Forum meeting where she explained to Ward 13 parents how the School Council conducts fundraising for our school community.  It was interesting to hear about other methods used by our surrounding schools.</p>
<p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Semi-Formal Dance</span></strong></p>
<p>The first dance of the year, our Semi-Formal, will be taking place at the Grand Luxe – 7:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11.   Please be advised that the school is not responsible for the after- semi party.</p>
<p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Music News</span></strong></p>
<p>Our Strings classes visited the Grade 7”s at St. Andrew’s, and our Band hosted 110 St. Andrew’s students where Grade 7 students received instruction from our senior students.</p>
<p>The senior band will be performing at the Toronto Centre for Performing Arts at the North York Community Remembrance Day Recital Hall.   The Senior Band has been invited to perform at Massey Hall on April 4<sup>th</sup> for The Sounds of Toronto.</p>
<p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">University Information Packages</span></strong></p>
<p>Counsellors made presentations in Grade 12 HF classes, as well as a separate presentation for the Ghost HF.  Ghost HF students who did not attend the presentation may still pick up their packages in Guidance.</p>
<p> PIN #’s for University accounts to OUAC will be available mid-November.  Students are encouraged to listen for announcements and to check the information monitors regularly.</p>
<p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">School Show &amp; Business Management Class</span></strong></p>
<p>Show time is fast approaching.  This year’s production is “Thoroughly Modern Millie” with shows on December 7, 8, and 9<sup>th</sup>.  There will be a Saturday matinee on December 10<sup>th</sup>.   The Business Management Class has arranged for special fundraising activities on opening night – December 7<sup>th</sup>, and a Dinner Theatre experience for Friday, December 9<sup>th</sup>.  All fundraising proceeds will go to the Toronto Foundation for Student Success.  Stay tuned for ticket sales announcements.</p>

<p>Congratulations to our Jr. Boys’ Volleyball team for capturing the North Region title again and congrats to the Sr. Boys’ Volleyball team for capturing the silver.  Winter sports are underway, with many beginning their tryouts this week.  YMAC just completed dodge ball intramurals and we’re about to begin basketball intramurals. YMAC is in the process of writing the athletics newsletter which will be available to parents upon completion.</p>

<p><span style="font-family:Helvetica;font-size:small;">Welcome Grade 10 students and all those new to York Mills.  We attempted to make this year’s registration process as smooth as possible, and from the number of students in their classes by the end of last week,  it seems that we’re right on target.  I thank parents, guardians, staff and students for your tremendous support.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:Helvetica;font-size:small;">I also want to take an opportunity to welcome back our Grade 11 and 12 students.  I look forward to celebrating your successes and events as you embark on your final years of high school.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:Helvetica;font-size:small;"> </span><span style="font-family:Helvetica;font-size:small;">All students have received a Student Agenda which contains pertinent information that all students need to know about specific protocols and expectations.  It is important that students share this information with parents/guardians.  A calendar of the year’s events and special days, late starts, early dismissals, school council meetings, etc, is found at the front of the Agenda.  Since this information went to print in June, circumstances may arise that will require changes to published dates.  In that event, I will send out a note informing parents/guardians of these changes.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:Helvetica;font-size:small;"> </span><span style="font-family:Helvetica;font-size:small;">My “Principal’s Notes” will include an <strong><em>Important Dates</em></strong> section immediately following all messages.  Other messages, if any, from Trustee Gershon, Superintendent Dickinson, Teachers, the TDSB, your School Council co-chairs – Toni Tanos and Julie Uehling, etc., will also appear just before <strong><em>Important Dates</em></strong><em>.</em></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:Helvetica;font-size:small;">We held our first Grade 10 assembly on Friday, September 9.  Timetables, expectations, student involvement, importance of getting to class on time, student rights, clubs, gold &amp; silver points, awards, etc. were discussed.  Grade 11 &amp; Grade 12 assemblies took take place Monday and Tuesday.  Students heard about mandatory graduation requirements, scholarships, exam policies, expectations, post-secondary information sessions, as well as the importance of demonstrating the Qualities of a York Mills Grad, as noted on Page 3 of the Agenda.  Post-Secondary institutions will be conducting information sessions during lunch in Titan Hall.  The list of presentations is posted outside the Guidance office.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:Helvetica;font-size:small;">In all assemblies, we stressed the importance of reading the information in the Student Agenda, with emphasis on the Code of Conduct on pages 6 &amp; 7, Eligibility for Student Involvement on page 9, Academic Dishonesty and Examinations on pages 12 &amp; 13.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:Helvetica;font-size:small;">On Friday, students heard an announcement about major events, including 9/11 as we approached the 10<sup>th</sup> anniversary.  All observed one minute of silence.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:Helvetica;font-size:small;">TTC Photo Card &amp; School Photos will be taken on Tuesday, September 20<sup>th</sup>.  Information will be handed out to students on Thursday, September 15<sup>th</sup><strong>.  The TTC will only accept the precise amount of $5.00 – no change will be available.</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:Helvetica;font-size:small;">Grade 10 Curriculum Night will be held on Thursday, September 22<sup>nd</sup>.  Parents will have an opportunity to gather information about the Grade 10 courses that your child is taking.  At 7:00 p.m. we will be holding an information session in the cafetorium.   Gr. 10 students received an invitation in home form. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:Helvetica;font-size:small;">Our School Council Co-Chairs have arranged for an informative School Council meeting on September 27 – 7:00 p.m. in Titan Hall.   We look forward to seeing parents at our first meeting of the year.</span><strong></strong></p>

<p>With exams fast approaching, I want to remind students to take note of their exam date, time and location, as per their exam schedule.  The schedule also includes:</p>
<ul>
<li> Mark Consultation Day – June 27 – See Schedule below</li>
<li>Instructions for students writing exams</li>
<li>Important note re additional time</li>
</ul>
<p> I want to especially draw your attention to item #7 under exam instructions which states: </p>
<p>             <strong>“Any students who are found to be cheating in any way on an </strong><strong> examination will be assigned a mark of ZERO (0) for the ENTIRE </strong><strong>examination.  No electronic devises (i.e. cell phones, iPods, etc.) are </strong><strong>allowed in the examination    room.  Students caught using electronic </strong><strong>devices for any reason during the     examination will be assigned a </strong><strong>zero grade.”</strong></p>
<p><strong> </strong>I strongly advise all students to leave their electronic devises at home or in their lockers during all exams.</p>
<p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Commencement:  Location – On The Park </span></strong></p>
<p>Graduating students arrive                     11:30 a.m.</p>
<p>Ceremony begins                                          12:30 p.m.</p>
<p>Students have been instructed to inform their guests to remain seated during the entire ceremony. </p>
<p> A professional photographer has been selected to take pictures of all students as they receive their awards and diplomas.  Therefore, I request that guests refrain from taking pictures in the isles.  The complementary pictures will be available to graduating students on June 30<sup>th</sup>, between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon in Titan Hall.</p>
<p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Summer School</span></strong></p>
<p>Summer school enrolment for upgrading failed courses is open until June 29<sup>th</sup>.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">OSSLT – Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test</span></strong></p>
<p>Students who were unsuccessful on the OSSLT (Literacy Test) will be informed June 15<sup>th</sup> in home form via a personal letter.  The letter will also outline next steps/options. </p>
<p>Names of all students who were successful will be posted on the main office door on June 15<sup>th</sup>. </p>
<p>Grade 12 Students who wish to complete the OSSLT should be registered in the summer Literacy Course.  Please see a guidance counselor ASAP to register.</p>
<p> I urge all who plan on going to summer school to enroll through our guidance department ASAP, since availability fills in quite rapidly.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Ontario Universities’ Admission Information Service</span></strong></p>
<p>For qualified graduating students who did not receive an offer of admission can inquire about possible openings at other Ontario universities through the OUAC.  To be considered for admission, applicants must have completed the OSSD, including six 4U/M courses by early September 2011.  An average of at least 60% is needed, although higher averages are normally required.</p>

<p><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Textbooks &amp; Resources</span></strong></p>
<p>Yesterday we held a textbook check and locker clean-up where students were asked to check that they are in possession of the textbooks they were granted for the semester.  Any outstanding textbooks, library resources, etc. will have to be paid for by the student prior to the end of the school year.  Lockers are to be cleared out and combination locks should be kept for next September.  Locks and all remaining contents of lockers will be cleared out beginning 12:00 noon on June 30<sup>th</sup>.   </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">ESL Trip:  </span></strong>  </p>
<p>48 ESL and newcomer students, accompanied by three ESL teachers, visited Montreal and Quebec City over the long weekend. In Montreal they relished a beautiful view from the top of Mont Royal at dusk. The next day they took a tour of McGill campus with a former YM ESL student (now studying biochemistry at McGill) as their guide. On their way to Quebec City, they visited a sugar shack and enjoyed a traditional Quebecois meal, accordion music, and toffee on snow.  In Quebec City, they explored the Old City during the day and enjoyed a disco cruise along the St. Lawrence River by night! The best moments of the trip, however, were the simple bonding moments the students shared on the 9-hour drive by coach and while consuming late-night pizzas at their hotel. The students were amazed by the beauty of Canada and formed supportive friendships in their new country.  They have enjoyed building community through the three trips they have taken thus far, and they look forward to more in the years to come.</p>
<p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Athletics:</span></strong>  Many of our athletic teams are in the throws of quarter finals, finals, and some will be going to OFSAA.  I am looking forward to the Athletic Banquet on June 10<sup>th</sup> where all the teams will be acknowledged for another amazing year.  Our MVP’s will also be announced at the banquet.  Parents are welcomed – see below.</p>

<p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Qualities of a York Mills Grad</span></strong>:  Throughout the year, teachers, support staff and administrators become aware of students who consistently demonstrate the qualities and characteristics we expect from our students as they prepare to graduate.  Teachers were asked to submit names of graduating students who have consistently displayed these qualities throughout their three or four years at YMCI – those qualities are found on the first page of the Student agenda.    On June 3, fifteen students have been invited to have lunch with administrators, and each has been asked to invite a teacher who has had the greatest impact on their time here.  These outstanding students will be acknowledged at the luncheon. </p>
<p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Grade 11 Information Assembly:</span></strong>  Gr. 11 students will attend an assembly tomorrow where they will receive information regarding post-secondary choices – entitled “Where Are You Going After YMCI?”  I have attached the power-point presentation for your information, and it will be posted on our web page as well.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Eco-School News:</span></strong>   Our Environmental Council has planned a facelift for our courtyard.  They received a $2,000 grant for the cleanup and have also applied for a $25,000 grant offered by The Keg restaurant.  Success for winning the $25,000 largely hinges on which</p>

<p> For those wanting to recycle small electronics like old c-phones, hand-held items, batteries, milk bags, etc., we now have a small  &#8220;recycling centre&#8221; just outside of the main office.  Students have begun using the centre, and by the looks of things, it’s very much a success.</p>
<p><strong> </strong><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Grade 10 Spanish</span>:</strong>  Last week our Grade 10 Spanish class went to Lula Lounge where they enjoyed a full afternoon of Latin music, dancing and delicious food. Students watched a Latin duo perform, then made their own music using instruments such as latin drums, maracas and tambores. Sabor!!! After an excellent lunch of &#8220;pollo al ajiote&#8221; students were given a salsa dance workshop and by the end of the afternoon had found their rhythm and were shaking their way through the Lounge!!!</p>
<p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Ontario Secondary School Spanish Contest</span> (OSSSC):</strong><br />
On May 5th, four York Mills students went to the University of Toronto to participate in the annual OSSSC where they competed against more than 50 other Ontario high schools and more than 100 other Spanish students. Students were tested on their writing, reading, listening and speaking skills in Spanish and we were extremely proud of this year&#8217;s outcome! Congratulations to our <strong>Grade 10 student, Olivia Hough, who placed second in her category, Grade 11 student Natasha Alexander who placed fifth, Grade 12 student Miruna Chitoi who received honourable mention and ninth place, and Native Spanish speaker Rocio Pena-Perez who placed third in her category. <p>If anyone in the community has children&#8217;s books that are headed for a yard sale, Ms. Barton is building a collection of children&#8217;s literature for our parenting class.   Books may be dropped off in the main office.               </p>
<p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Commencement – June 28 – 11:30  p.m. sharp:</span></strong>  During an assembly, grads received information they need to know in order to prepare for commencement.  We ask that families stay in their seats until the end of the ceremony so that all students and guests are respected, and that pictures be taken after the ceremony has ended.  Students will be guided back to their seats immediately after receiving their awards and diplomas.  Your assistance is greatly appreciated.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As we near the final few months of the school year, it’s gratifying to know that many students are connecting with their teachers for after-school extra help.  Marks are a pretty accurate indication of the amount of effort that students bring to their subject areas.  I urge students to seek the help they need from their teachers early on in order to successfully complete assignments, tests and exams.</p>
<p>This time of year is also one of the busiest with many clubs wrapping up performances, athletics either wrapping up or just beginning the season, and students involved in fundraisers.  Our next big event is our Prom, followed by the Gold and Silver Awards ceremony, Athletic Banquet, and finally, Commencement.  To be sure, there are many more excursions, activities and performances along the way.  Please see the dates for these events at the end of this communication.</p>

<p> &#8221;O<strong><em>ur First Show Choir, “Cheat Notes:”</em></strong></p>
<p>I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our Show Choir, <em>Cheat Notes</em>, both singers and instrumentalists, for an outstanding performance at the finals at the CNE’s first Canadian National Show Choir competitions on Saturday.  Up against some pretty competitive schools on Friday, <em>Cheat Notes</em> captured a standing in the finals, and on Saturday, they placed 6<sup>th</sup> in all of Canada.  We are so proud of their accomplishments.  Congratulations to all and to Ms. Maxwell-Steel for an amazing first year!</p>

<p> <strong><em>Vocal Night</em></strong></p>
<p>Our students performed their first annual Vocal Night two weeks ago to a full audience.  The performances were outstanding, and the audience enjoyed a variety of music. Sometimes I forget that we’re not an Arts school.  Superb entertainment!</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Management Classes Fundraiser:</span>  </strong></p>
<p><strong><em> </em></strong><strong><em>“Viva York Mills: A Tribute to Vegas</em></strong></p>
<p>Ms. Persaud’s Business classes have planned an exciting, entertaining, after-school event, complete with food.  All proceeds will go to Toronto Foundation for Student Success.  Those of you who attended “Café for A Cause” last semester will know what to expect. Last semester one class raised $3,000.  This semester the two classes have expanded the event.  Those who buy a ticket will also receive a flexible red wrist band that says “<em>Heart of a Titan Viva YM” </em> while quantities last.<em>   </em>If you are able, drop by, have dinner and enjoy the show.  The event begins at 3:30 p.m., ending at 6:00 p.m. </p>
<p> <strong><em>Status of Women Leadership Award</em></strong></p>
<p>Congratulations go out to Mrs. Persaud and student A.J. McDowell who have been chosen to receive a Status of Women Leadership Award for Equity.  There will be a presentation at the Status of Women 11<sup>th</sup> annual Awards Dinner where their achievements will be honoured.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">DD Class News</span></strong></p>
<p>Together with their Best Buddies, the students and four teachers participated in a dance fundraiser.  Four teachers had bids from students, and the teacher with the most bids had an opportunity to do a solo dance on stage.  To celebrate, all the Best Buddies, DD students and teachers danced on stage.  $100 was raised for the Best Buddies activities.  Students and Best Buddies are now looking forward to their bowling excursion.</p>
